Shardlow Pumping Station - maintaining canal water levels in times of flood

Inside this brick building are housed four pumps which transfer surface water from the parish culvert running through the village into another culvert that drains to the River Trent. You can see the flood bank behind the Pumping Station, and as the video pans around, the open flood gates and finally the outlet culvert. In flood conditions, the flood gates on the canal are closed and the pumps are used to control both the canal level inside the flood bank area and manage water levels in the parish culvert.
